A Nashville nurse on her way to work this week died on the freeway. Caitlyn Marie Kaufman, 26, was driving her Mazda CX-5 SUV at 7 p.m. Shift at St. Thomas West Hospital Thursday night when someone opened fire on her vehicle, Nashville police said in a news release Friday.
Kaufman was traveling on I-440 West at the time, and police said his car stopped on the side of the freeway between the Hillsboro Pike and West End Avenue exits. Just before 9 p.m., a Metro Parks agent stopped by to search the car. He mistook it for a single car accident and found that Kaufman had been shot.
According to an expedition record, the car had bullet holes and was still in motion when the officer found it.
When the officer called for help, Kaufman died instantly.
Investigators Findings
Investigators currently believe that Kaufman escaped promptly at 7 p.m. Shift, and this session took place between 6 p.m. and at 6.30 p.m.
Police Capt. Tyler Chandler, of nearby Mount Juliet, urged anyone with information to share with Nashville police.

According to his Facebook profile, Kaufman has worked at St. Thomas West Hospital since December 2018 and was originally from Chicora, Pennsylvania.
No suspects were named in the shooting and details remain scarce as detectives investigate.
