Cody Fox and his daughter die in fiery shipwreck Saturday
Cody Fox, a Tennessee man, and his 9-month-old daughter, Ariana, were among those killed in a blazing fire Saturday in Alabama, authorities said.
Fox’s fiancee Hayle Anderson was also injured in the accident and was in intensive care Sunday, according to the South Pittsburg Mountain Volunteer Fire Department in Tennessee.
The shipwreck occurred when Tropical Storm Claudette swept through the region. The nearly 20-car crash occurred about an hour south of Montgomery on Saturday afternoon and left at least 10 people dead, including nine children.
Fox’s brother, Blake Fox, told The Tennessean Monday that the couple were traveling with several family members on their way back from their Gulf Shores, Alabama vacation in multiple cars. He said Anderson underwent surgery and they hope she will soon be transferred to a hospital near Chattanooga. Anderson’s son, Bentley, was in a separate car but was not injured.
Anderson’s late husband, who was Bentley’s father, also died in a car accident, Blake Fox said. He said his brother and Bentley were very close and that he always showed it to his daughter.
“She gives you the biggest bear hugs,” Blake Fox said of his brother. She had the dumbest laugh. She really she never met a stranger. ”
He said that Ariana was feisty and sweet.
“My dad always said that she looks like his grandmother,” he said. “She has one of the cutest smiles.”
On the day of the accident, Blake Fox said he and his family sat for hours until they confirmed that his brother and his niece had died. They called every law enforcement agency they could find for more details, as the chaotic scene unfolded more than four hours from them. He said funeral arrangements are still pending.
Blake Fox said his brother was a volunteer firefighter with the New Hope Volunteer Fire Department for more than 15 years and was helping his father build a local business in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, where they lived.
“He always went out of his way to help people,” he said.

“Words cannot express the pain I have felt since I received the call yesterday afternoon informing me of the death of Cody and his daughter in a car accident in South Alabama,” read a post on the Facebook page of the agency. “Cody was an integral part of the Marion County EMA staff, always ready, always ready to serve. We will greatly miss his optimistic demeanor, his willingness to learn, and undoubtedly the most courteous young man I have ever met. I offer my deepest prayers for his parents and his family. He was a dedicated responder, a good son, a good brother, a good father, and a good friend. ”
Fox graduated in 2011 from Richard Hardy Memorial School in Pittsburg, Tennessee, according to a Facebook post from the school. The post said that Fox and his family were returning from vacation.
“Our faculty and staff have heavy hearts today as we mourn the loss of one of our former students,” the post read. “We would like to express our condolences to his family.”
