According to an affidavit, Steven Timothy Smith, 59, was literally caught in the act Friday night after police claimed they found blood on his hands and clothing. Officers say Smith waived Miranda’s rights to him and spoke to police.
The victim, a 49-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime 1025 p. 375 East.
On Friday night, Smith became angry at the victim and left the house before withdrawing a “large amount of money” from his bank account.
Smith then returned home and asked anyone other than his family to leave him. Police say Smith and the victim have children together, and those children were present when the alleged murder occurred.
Smith told police “that he has no recollection of what happened between the time he told unfamiliar people to leave the residence and the arrival of site officials.
Witnesses told police that Smith had hidden the gun in a closet and that when police found the gun there was blood on the handle.
While the police investigated, Smith wandered around the house.
He was arrested without incident and taken to the Washington County Jail, where he is charged with first degree murder.
