Gold Logie Winner Lorrae Desmond

The Gold Logie winner, best known for her role as Shirley Gilroy on the Australian soap opera A Country Practice, passed away over the weekend.

Born Beryl Hunt in 1929 in Mittagong, on the south coast of New South Wales, she moved to Britain with her family at the age of 10.

Her career began in the UK when she represented the nation at the 1957 Eurovision Song Contest.

She returned to Australia in the 1960s and began singing and dancing on the eponymous variety show The Lorrae Desmond Show. She was the first woman to win a Gold Logie.

Career

The television star also maintained troops in Vietnam, the Middle East, Malaysia, Singapore, Kenya and Somalia between 1967 and 1971.

She was in A Country Practice from 1981 to 1992 before playing Donald Fisher’s mother, Isobel Dupre, on Home And Away in 1997.

That year, Desmond was on the Australia Day 2021 Honor Roll as a member of the Australian Order for her service to the performing arts.

In January, she told TV Tonight: “I don’t know what I did to deserve it. But I am very honored. It was a huge surprise.”

“I am grateful that I am still alive. I will be celebrating with friends and family on the Gold Coast. I’ll drink sambuca while they enjoy the champagne, “she said.
