Who is Paul Conlon?
Former Sunderland AFC and Hartlepool United player Paul Conlon has pleaded guilty to the murder of his father Harry Conlon.
The tragedy followed an incident at Mr. Conlon Senior’s home in Sunderland on December 24 of last year.
Conlon Jr., 43, without a fixed address, was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after Mr. Conlon Senior, 77, was taken to hospital with head injuries.

He was later charged with murder after his father died on January 18.
Conlon was due to stand trial today in Newcastle Crown Court, but he pleaded guilty to manslaughter, which has been accepted by prosecutors.
Tomorrow he will be sentenced.
Judge Lambert placed Conlon in pretrial detention and gave no indication of the likely sentence.
Conlon joined Sunderland in 1996 under controversial circumstances after breaking into Hartlepool United’s senior team with four goals in 11 games.
Sunderland was able to sign the forward for free after seemingly exploiting a loophole in his Pools contract.
But he never played for the Black Cats first team and went on to football outside of the league.
After the death of Mr. Conlon Senior, Det Ch Insp Jane Fairlamb, the lead investigating officer on the case, said: “This is a tragic case that has sadly resulted in Harry’s death and our thoughts are with his family in this terrible moment. “
