Nelson Haggerty Biography
Nelson Haggerty, an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team, was killed in a car accident this morning, according to News Station 6.
Nelson Haggerty Death Cause
The 47-year-old died at 2:30 a.m. in a single car accident on Highway 380 near Decatur. Haggerty was pronounced dead at the scene after his vehicle exited on the right side of US 380 and struck an opening, according to Texomashomepage.com. The vehicle was shot down and crossed a fence before settling down, Texas DPS Sgt. Dan Buesing said.
Haggerty served as Director of Basketball Strategy and Operations for the men’s basketball team and joined the workforce in October 2019 as a special assistant to head coach Grant McCasland. He was part of the workforce that led North Texas to its first NCAA tournament victory in program history in March.

Haggerty has more than 18 years of coaching experience and was the head coach at Midwestern State University for eight years before moving to North Texas. During his time at Midwestern State, he became the third winning coach in program history and the 100 fastest wins in 130 games. Before serving as the Mustangs head coach, Haggerty was also an assistant head coach at Midwestern State under McCasland.
