Police discovered the baby’s body on August 18, 2021.
Mercedes Lain was reported missing after she was last seen Saturday in Mishawaka with Justin Lee Miller, according to a Silver Alert issued by police.
On Wednesday, police made the grim discovery and announced the arrest of Miller, and parents Kenneth Lain and Tiffany Coburn, at a news conference published Thursday by The Goshen News.
Charged
Lain, 41, and Coburn, 32, were charged with neglect of a dependent on Monday after refusing to cooperate in the search for the baby, while Miller, 37, was charged with neglect of a dependent that resulted in death, police said.
Miller is a family friend who has been babysitting for several days.
“The search for 11-month-old Mercedes Lain ended at approximately 9:30 p.m. in a remote, dark and heavily forested area, ”said Marshall County Deputy Chief District Attorney Nelson Chipman.
Investigation
After several interviews, Justin Miller brought investigators to this location in Stark County, ”said Chipman.
It is not clear how young Mercedes died.
