Who was Chuck Close?
Chuck Close, a photographer and artist known for painting photorealistic portraits, died at the age of 81. His attorney, John Silberman, announced Thursday that he died at a hospital in Oceanside, New York.
Adriana Elgarresta, director of public relations for the Pace Gallery in New York, in a statement that Close was diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia in 2015. The immediate cause of death was congestive heart failure.
Close was known for painting large self-portraits of himself and his friends he met during the 1970s and 1980s. His first (and probably most iconic) painting was a photo of himself in black and white. the black the a cigarette.
His famous brush technique included the use of an airbrush and diluted black paint.
Close had some turmoil in his life when he was hit for sexual harassment by his female models. The claims arose in 2017 and his doctor also claimed that his misbehavior could be attributed to his 2013 Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

He was 81 year old.
When the allegations came to light, the National Gallery of Art in Washington canceled an exhibition of his art. However, despite the news, many other museums around the world (including the National Gallery) continued to display paintings.
“If I embarrassed someone or made them feel uncomfortable, I am very sorry, it was not my intention,” he told the New York Times when the claims made headlines. “I admit I have a dirty mouth, but we are all adults.”

Close was born in Monroe, Washington, on July 5, 1940. He once told Artnews magazine that he had a close relationship with his father. His father was a plumber and inventor who “made things for me: toys from scratch, whole bicycles from scratch.”
His father died when he was 11 years old and his mother supported his artistic work. Art was her greatest passion, as she struggled with undiagnosed dyslexia in other classes.

“Face blindness has bothered me since I was a kid,” Close said in an interview with Brain & Life magazine in 2011. “I didn’t know my classmates. At the end of the school year, I still had trouble recognizing them.”
Close was married to Leslie Rose from 1967 until they split by ‘from 2011’.
