Kellye SoRelle Biography

Who is Kellye SoRelle ?

A lawyer for the far-right extremist group Oath Keepers has been charged with conspiracy in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, authorities said Thursday.

Kellye SoRelle, general counsel for the anti-government group, was arrested in Texas on charges including conspiring to obstruct the certification of President Joe Biden’s electoral college victory, the Justice Department said.

SoRelle, 43, is a close associate of Stewart Rhodes, the Oath Keepers leader who is headed to trial later this month along with other extremists on charges of seditious conspiracy.

The Texas attorney volunteered for Lawyers for Trump and served as general counsel for the far-right organization Oath Keepers.

Oath Keepers militia founder Stewart Rhodes uses a radio as he leaves with volunteers from a rally hosted by US President Donald Trump in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, on October 10, 2019 .

Arrested and Charged

After Rhodes’ arrest in January, SoRelle told the media that she was acting as president of Oath Keepers while he was behind bars.

Prosecutors accused Rhodes and his militia group of plotting for weeks to stop the transfer of power and keep former President Donald Trump in office, buying weapons, organizing military-style training and laying out battle plans.

SoRelle told The Associated Press last year, when FBI agents seized her phone as part of the Jan. 6 investigation, that she had no knowledge of or involvement in the Capitol breach. She called the seizure of her phone “unethical” and the investigation “a witch hunt.”

Stewart Rhodes is the leader of the Oathkeepers. He is headed to trial later this month along with other extremists on charges of seditious conspiracy.

SoRelle made an initial court appearance in Austin, Texas, and was released pending a virtual hearing scheduled for Tuesday before a federal court judge in Washington, D.C., a spokesman for the US attorney’s office in D.C. said. It was not immediately clear if she has an attorney speaking on her behalf.

SoRelle was photographed with Rhodes outside the Capitol on Jan. 6 and was present at a meeting in an underground garage the night before the riot that has been the focus of investigators.

The meeting included Rhodes and Enrique Tarrio, the former president of the Proud Boys, who is separately charged with seditious conspiracy along with other members of the extremist group that describes itself as a politically incorrect men’s club for “Western chauvinists.”

The publicly released video of the meeting does not reveal much about their discussion and prosecutors have only said that one of the meeting participants ‘referenced the Capitol.’

SoRelle is also charged with obstructing official proceedings, obstruction of justice by tampering with documents, and one count of misdemeanor trespassing on Capitol grounds. The indictment says she persuaded others to destroy and hide records sought by investigators.

She has been working as a legal representative for Oath Keepers, where several members are now facing charges of sedition. The far-right lawyer told the AP last September that agents seized her phone and provided her with a search warrant saying it was related to a seditious conspiracy investigation, among other crimes.

Her indictment against her made public Thursday does not include a seditious conspiracy charge.

SoRelle went viral in July after doing a green screen in Queer Eye’s kitchen for her January 6 testimonial. Many Twitter users asked ‘what the hell gay’ was a far-right lawyer doing using the liberal show’s kitchen as a background.

Even Queer Eye’s Bobby Berk joined in on the fun, writing: ‘Maybe this is his way of asking for our help? Blink three times, girl, if you want to save yourself from yourself.
