Who was Angus Gaye ?
DRUMMIE Zeb, the lead singer of the reggae band Aswad, has died at the age of 62.
The pioneer, born Angus Gaye, has “left a huge void”, his bandmates said today in confirming the tragic news.

They said in a statement: “It is with deep regret and profound loss that we have to announce the passing of our brother Angus ‘Drummie’ Gaye.
“Drummie was the lead vocalist of the iconic band Aswad and he is well loved and respected by his family, friends and colleagues alike.
“More information will come later, but on behalf of his and Aswad’s family, we ask that his privacy be respected at this heartbreaking time.”
“Drummie has left us to join our ancestors and he leaves a huge void both personally and professionally.”
Since then, Drummie tributes have poured in, with UB40’s Ali Campbell leading the most heartfelt messages.
He wrote on Twitter: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Aswads Drummie Zeb. We have lost another pioneer of UK Reggae.
Another fan wrote: “Devastated to hear of the passing of an absolute legend and huge inspiration – Drummie Zeb was special. RIP.”
A third wrote: “Aswad were absolute pioneers when it came to British reggae and I love that they’ve been commercially successful without losing their roots.”
Someone else said: “One of my favorite groups, led by a very special man.”
Aswad started performing in the 1970s, releasing 21 albums in total and touring around the world.
His hits include Don’t Turn Around and Shine.
After 16 years, band member Forde left the band in 1996 for spiritual reasons, leaving Drummie as the sole founding member.
