Garry Brodersen Biography
Garry Brodersen, 66, was convicted of reckless behavior and endangering the health or life of a child after a two-day trial, DuPage County prosecutors said Wednesday. Both charges are Class A felonies.
Garry Brodersen, former Bartlett High School teacher, convicted of pouring liquid nitrogen on a student.
Prosecutors said Brodersen was conducting a science demonstration for his class in May 2018 when he poured liquid nitrogen into a student’s chest and groin.
The student volunteered to participate in the experiment, but did so under the impression that he would just pour liquid nitrogen into his chest, a spokesman for the prosecutor told CBS Chicago.
The student was lying on his back during a chemistry class when Brodersen poured liquid nitrogen on his chest and then more on his groin, the Daily Herald reports.
Cell phone footage reportedly showed the student jumping in pain after the chemical was poured into his groin, the Herald said.
Prosecutors said the student suffered burns to his groin
Prosecutors said the student suffered burns to his groin and one of his fingers as a result of the accident.
In a written statement, prosecutor Robert Berlin called the case “very disturbing.”
“Mr. Brodersen used extremely poor judgment when he sprayed a student with a dangerous chemical during a scientific demonstration,” Berlin said.
Brodersen has yet to be convicted of the crime, although he is expected to reappear in court on March 18.
After the incident, Brodersen resigned and offered his teaching certificate, a school district spokesperson told the Chicago Tribune.
An attorney for Brodersen could not be immediately identified to speak on his behalf. The prosecution did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
