Who is Rafi Goodwin?
Rafi Goodwin had been attacked with an unknown article following a verbal altercation on Limes Avenue, near his Ess*x synagogue, shortly after 1:15 p.m. yesterday, it was reported.
He needed treatment at King George’s Hospital after he suffered cuts to his head and around one eye, and his phone was stolen.
Arrested
Two Ilford men, ages 18 and 25, were arrested this afternoon on intentional GBH suspicions. They are currently in custody.
Police say they do not believe the incident is “related to events taking place abroad or incidents that have taken place in other parts of the country.”
Issuing an appeal yesterday, Ess*x Police said two teenagers were believed to have stopped in front of the victim’s vehicle while driving, before yelling at him and speaking ‘disparagingly about his religion before damaging his car’.
“When he got out of his car to confront them, he was attacked with an unknown object, forcing him to require hospital treatment,” a spokesman said.
Today, following the arrests, a spokesperson said: ‘Throughout today, our officers have engaged with local Jewish communities to provide reassurance and updates after the incident.
“Community members and religious leaders, who are celebrating Shavuot, have been speaking with our officers in Chigwell and Southend this morning.”
Chief Superintendent Stuart Hooper said:
‘We know that this is a very important moment, a time for communities to come together, be together and celebrate. We don’t want anyone to feel like they can’t do it safely.
Officers have spent the day talking to the Jewish community to reassure them.
“At this time we do not believe that this incident is related to events taking place abroad or incidents that have taken place in other parts of the country.”
Police also continue to appeal for anyone with information about the incident to reach out at that time.
A spokesperson said: “ Anyone with relevant information on this incident, CCTV footage, dash cam or doorbell, particularly in the Limes Avenue, Tudor Crescent and Fencepiece Road areas, should contact Loughton CID at 101 citing the crime reference number 42/92174/21.
