Lauren Dickason was silent on the dock at Timaru District Court in New Zealand, where she and her husband Graham, an orthopedic surgeon, had moved from South Africa just a few weeks ago with two-year-old twins Karla. and Maya and her older children. Sister Liane, six.

Dickason discovered the tragedy shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday when she returned home after attending a work function at Timaru Hospital.

In court Saturday morning, her wife was taken out of cells in a light gray hoodie and black pants to make a brief appearance to hear the charges for the first time.

She looked dejected and distraught that she did not plead guilty and she was transferred to a secure mental health unit until her next appearance in Timaru High Court on October 5.

Ms. Dickason did not speak during the hearing and did not plead guilty. She nodded briefly upon hearing from her attorney, Kelly Beazley.

The couple, married for 15 years, had only been released from forced Covid quarantine for 14 days in a hotel following their life-changing flight from South Africa to start a new life days before the alleged murders.

There was nothing in the couple’s background to suggest a troubled family, according to their long-time Pretoria nanny, Mendy Sibanyoni.

Both parents had “loved their children like nobody else,” said Ms Sebanyoni, whom Ms Dickason had described on Facebook as an “angel.”

Just four months ago, Ms. Dickason had paid a loving public tribute to her husband on her Facebook, writing: “Happy 15th wedding anniversary … What an adventure,” she wrote.

“We have really created a beautiful family and we have a great time together. May the coming years be more blessed, happier and may the children let us sleep ”.

Cause of Death

Through his lawyer, he initially requested the removal of the name, but withdrew it after objections from the media.

Many details were suppressed by New Zealand law and no cause of death has emerged for any of the three girls.

Judge Dominic Dravitzki ordered a report under the New Zealand Crimes Act to determine Ms. Dickason’s state of mind at the time of the murders.

I am broken. Part of me is gone, ” Ms Sebanyoni told South African media. And it’s like those children, they are also my children because I raised them. They were such nice children.

‘I don’t know what to do with this because the only question I have right now is, what happened? What went wrong?

‘I never saw any fights in that family or anything. We treat each other like family. I was family too. Nothing was happening.

Ms. Sebanyoni, who had tried unsuccessfully to communicate with Mr. Dickason in New Zealand, said that the three girls were all courteous and polite. ‘

“They listened when you told them not to do that, and when they wanted something, they asked,” she said.

“We used to play outside and take a walk in the streets. When I walked in, they used to be excited that Mendy was here. They said goodbye to her mother and ‘let’s play with Mendy’.

Ms. Dickason was described as “very humble” and “the kindest person”, by a former Pretoria neighbor.

‘I can’t understand what happened, she’s a medical doctor and she wasn’t arrogant or anything like that.

“She was very humble,” her former colleague and neighbor, Natasja le Roux, told the South African Sunday Times.

“She was a really good person, her and her husband.”

According to information on her Facebook page, Ms Dickason went to Pretoria Girls’ High School before reading medicine at the University of Cape Town.

She graduated in 2004. In 2007 she became a GP at Pretoria East Hospital Orthopedic Theater.

The former neighbor said the couple had struggled to conceive their children and were dedicated and loving parents.

“They waited years for those kids because she had fertility issues and stuff, so it’s really a big shock,” said Ms Le Roux.

Another former neighbor, who did not want to be named, said the couple was very “grateful” for their children.

They absolutely adored those children. They were very grateful to have them because they struggled to get pregnant and when they finally had the children, they loved them, ” said the neighbor.

‘Something just doesn’t add up. I don’t know if it’s the stress of New Zealand, moving there, being quarantined for so long and everything, just not coping with it. So I think what happened is not normal, they were not normal circumstances, ‘said the neighbor.

The only sign of distress in Mrs. Dickason’s life came in a Facebook post in March that referred to the mental illness suffered by Hollywood stars Demi Lovato, Robin Williams and Carrie Fisher.

Underlined in red was a section that said, “Unfortunately, we live in a world where if you break a bone, everyone comes to sign the cast, but if you tell people you’re depressed, they run the other way.”

Neighbors in Timaru have described anguished wailing shortly after Dickason came home Thursday night and she watched as she was comforted by another doctor who lived next door.

His wife was taken to the hospital after police arrived minutes later.

Neighbors heard Mr. Dickason yell, “Is this really happening?” her when she got home.

The children’s father, Graham Dickason, who is an orthopedic surgeon, had returned to his home in Timaru around 10 p.m. Thursday, where he discovered the children’s bodies. In the photo: Graham and Lauren

A photograph posted to social media on August 30 shows the three girls happily grasping small kiwi stuffed animals with a beaming smile when they arrived in the country.

“The first noise we heard was someone sobbing, and then we heard a thud as if someone had just closed a door,” neighbor Jade Whaley told Stuff.

“We could see someone through our fence wandering behind the house and crying.”

Another resident, Karen Cowper, described hearing a man cry and say ‘is this really happening?’

We asked him if he was okay. She didn’t respond to us and was screaming and crying hysterically, ” Ms Cowper said.

The girls’ grandmother said the family was struggling to understand what had happened.

Actually, she still hasn’t assimilated. We are in a terrible state of shock. We are devastated, ” she told Stuff.

Canterbury Police District Commander Superintendent John Price said the family appeared to have few contacts in New Zealand.

Earlier this month, the mother took to social media for help as they prepared for the move.

She had asked for advice on buying furniture in Timaru and she wanted to know which schools would be the best for her children.

Detective Inspector Scott Anderson said New Zealand police were “talking to people in management and no one else is being wanted at this time.”

The deaths are the second tragedy in as many months to befall the South Island community.

Last month, five teens were killed in a car accident in which only the 19-year-old driver survived.
