Who is Lee Chugg ?
Two drug addicts have been jailed for a combined 38 years in prison after murdering a vulnerable charity shop volunteer in his own home.
Stephen Fogg, 60, who had learning disabilities and autism, was kicked and kicked to death on December 14, 2020.
Lee Chugg, 42, and Jodie Swannick, 32, had gone to Mr Fogg’s house in Wembury, Devon that night hoping to find alcohol or money to steal, but ended up subjecting him to a ‘savage’ attack.
The pair caused “catastrophic” injuries to Mr Fogg which left the lower part of his face shattered and his chest sunken, Exeter Crown Court heard on Friday.
Forensic evidence showed Swannick’s shoe print on Mr. Fogg’s face and Chugg’s bloodstained trainer’s print on his Plymouth Argyle shirt.
The pair then searched Mr. Fogg’s pockets before fleeing the scene without calling an ambulance.
Police located them at another home in Plymouth eight days after Fogg’s body was discovered by one of his caretakers.
He was found to have sustained 31 external head and neck injuries, including numerous skull fractures, and was bleeding into the left side of his brain.
He also had 27 fractures in 19 of his 24 ribs.
The pathologist on the case estimated that Fogg may have lived for at least 30 minutes after being hit.
Chugg and Swannick have denied killing Fogg
Mr. Fogg, who worked part-time at the Red Cross shop in Plymstock and was helped to live independently, met Chugg through his daily visits to his local town shop where he spent his £7.25 which he received from his carers.
He had become more wary of Chugg after suspecting that he had stolen his television during a robbery a few months earlier.
Chugg and Swannick have denied killing Fogg, but were convicted at trial this month.
During a sentencing hearing on Friday, Chugg’s lawyer, Ignatius Hughes QC, argued that the attack was not premeditated, due to perceived ideas about the victim’s sexuality, sadistic, or for profit.
Hughes asked the court to put Chugg’s previous convictions and violent crimes into perspective.
Swannick’s Richard Smith QC said: “It seems to us that this was something that developed in that department, whatever the reasoning, and it got completely out of hand in terms of anger.”
Mr. Smith said that Swannick’s criminal record, consisting primarily of shoplifting cases, was not as extensive as her co-defendant’s, and that she had expressed “genuine understanding and genuine regret” for what she had said. have done.
Judge Peter Johnson said: ‘He [Mr Fogg] was a harmless man who posed no threat to anyone. A witness described it as having the brain of a 12-year-old boy.
“His main activity of his appears to be the collection and possession of various items, including Christmas decorations.
“He was well known around Wembury as someone who wanted to be everyone’s friend. He will be missed by those who knew him.’
On the night in question, Judge Johnson said: “Mr. Chugg and Mrs. Swannick had gone to Mr. Fogg’s home and subjected him to a savage murderous attack when both defendants participated in kicking and trampling Mr. . Fogg”. The injuries were catastrophic, as shown in the jury packet diagrams.
I am convinced that Mr. Fogg pleaded for his life and that each defendant searched his pockets as he lay mortally wounded.
‘Over the next few days, both defendants seemed to display a callous indifference. All they cared about was saving their own skin. They were held together by the gray bond of knowing what they had both done.
Turning to Chugg, he said, “In my view, you are an extremely dangerous man prone to outbursts of serious violence whenever you are drunk.”
Both were sentenced to life in prison with Chugg of Plymouth, told he would serve a minimum of 20 years, and Swannick, homeless, 18 years before they were eligible for parole.
