Who is Barbarito Pantoja ?

Two 17-year-olds were among four people arrested for planning an AK-47 massacre at a school in South Texas.

Nathaniel Montelongo and Barbarito Pantoja, both 17, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. They are being held on $750,000 bond and their mugshots were released Thursday night.

Arrested and Charged

Two other students, both minors, were also arrested in connection with the plot and will face a judge on Friday, The Brownsville Herald reported.

The four were arrested after police in Donna, a small community in the Rio Grande Valley, received an anonymous tip that they planned to attack the school. Officials declined to reveal which campus in the district was targeted by the plot.

A source familiar with the investigation told the newspaper on Wednesday that police had found an AK-47 and a list of targeted students at the home of one of the suspects.

However, police on Thursday denied the existence of the alleged blacklist and refused to provide details about a possible weapons seizure, citing that the information was “critical to the case” and “will not be released.”

News of the plot, which prompted a school closure order Wednesday night, came a day after a gunman massacred 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, some 300 miles north. of donna.

Police held a news conference Thursday announcing the arrests.

“We stopped an act of physical violence and harm to our students,” Donna Police Department Chief Donald Crist said during the briefing.

He said the two adult men, referring to Montelongo and Pantoja, had been charged, but noted that the other suspects would face a juvenile judge.

Reiterating that the threat against the school was “credible,” authorities denied rumors circulating on social media about a list targeting specific students.

‘There was no list of targets. Supposedly there were some rumors, but there was no such thing,” Police Chief Gilbert Guerrero said, according to KVEO-TV.

The chief added that the incident remains under investigation and encouraged parents to be more observant of their children.

‘Watch your kids, make sure what they’re doing. Look what they have in their rooms, stay tuned,’ he said.

Officials also stated that they believe Donna’s students are safe within the district due to additional support from various law enforcement agencies.

The district had canceled classes on Thursday and Friday after the threat of a school shooting prompted a closure on Wednesday. School will resume next Tuesday after the Memorial Day holiday.

Investigation

The conspirators’ plot involved shooting at a school in the district, a source familiar with the matter told The Monitor.

The insider also alleged that cops found an AK-47 and a list of targeted students at the home of one of the suspects. Authorities have denied the list and declined to comment on the alleged weapon seized.

While the AK-47 gained fame as a Soviet-era machine gun, there are semi-automatic versions of the rifle that are legal for private ownership in the US.

The Donna Independent School District confirmed the threat in a statement Wednesday, saying, “We have received a credible threat of violence that is currently under investigation.” In light of recent events and in an abundance of caution, we will be canceling school district-wide and staff will be working from home.

The canceled school days will affect a number of end-of-year award ceremonies and advancement celebrations at Donna Elementary School, according to the school calendar.

The district’s high school graduation is scheduled for June 3.

In a social media post, officials said the senior class prom, which had been scheduled for Friday with the theme “Enchanted Forest” after two years of pandemic disruptions, would be postponed, but not would be cancelled.

The disturbing investigation into Donna came just one day after the deadliest school shooting in the US since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut nearly a decade ago.

On Tuesday, a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary in Uvalde after shooting his grandmother in the face in a dispute over her phone bill.

The shooter, identified as 18-year-old Salvador Rolando Ramos, was killed by police after barricading himself inside a classroom and massacring the fourth graders inside.

Ramos was exchanging text messages with a girl in Germany and sent the chilling final message ‘I’m going to shoot up a primary school’ minutes before the attack.

The gunman shot the 66-year-old grandmother in the face at her Uvalde home and then fled in her truck while calling for help, authorities said.

A short distance away, Ramos crashed the truck outside the school, exited with a rifle and approached a back door, authorities said.

They said an officer assigned to the school ‘compromised’ Ramos, but the gunman entered the building and walked down a hallway to a fourth-grade classroom.

After locking the classroom door, he opened fire around 11:30 a.m. m. with an AR-15 style rifle carrying multiple magazines.

A team that included local officers and Border Patrol agents eventually forced the door open and shot Ramos to death after he shot them, police said.

Why are we willing to live with this carnage ?

President Joe Biden called for tougher gun laws after Tuesday’s massacre: “Gun manufacturers have spent two decades aggressively marketing assault weapons that give them the biggest and biggest profit.”

“For God’s sake, we have to have the courage to stand up to the industry.”

Ramos had legally purchased two semi-automatic rifles at a local hunting and outdoor store, according to officials and multiple news reports.

“The idea that an 18-year-old can walk into a gun store and buy two assault weapons is just wrong,” Biden said Tuesday. “As a nation, we have to ask ourselves: when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?”

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said Thursday that he is ashamed that the United States “is becoming desensitized to the murder of children” and that action is needed now to prevent more lives from being lost in school shootings.

“After Columbine, after Sandy Hook, after Parkland, after each of these and other massacres, we as educators have done everything we can to look parents in the eye and assure them that we will do everything we can to protect their babies,” Cardona said, referring to school shootings in Colorado, Connecticut and Florida.
