Jordan Gerbich Biography
A former California resident was sentenced to three months in prison for killing a protected elephant seal in the state.
Jordan Gerbich, 30, was convicted Monday of killing the marine mammal at an elephant seal viewing area near Piedras Blancas State Marine Reserve in San Simeon in September 2019.
Gerbich, who now lives in Utah, pleaded guilty to illegally capturing a marine mammal last December.
He used a .45 caliber pistol to shoot and kill the seal that was lying on the beach in the Piedras Blancas colony.
Northern elephant seals, a species protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, live along the Pacific coast and typically congregate in land areas called breeding grounds.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the main threat to mammals is becoming entangled in fishing gear and being hit by boats.
