Complications from pneumonia were the cause of the Brooklyn-born leader’s death, the family told Rolling Stone magazine.
Black was the second “Jay” to lead the group, after Jay Traynor. A third “Jay” headed the band when they reformed in the early 2000s, the magazine reported.
The 1960s New York pop-rock group based on doo-wop announced the death of the lead singer, whose real name was David Blatt, on Facebook.
“We recognize the great successes we had with him as a partner and as a lead singer,” the band wrote.
“We share wonderful and very controversial moments, and like an ex-wife, we are very proud of the beautiful children we create. We will always remember The Voice. “
