Susan Granger, a friend of Powell and a spokeswoman for the family, confirmed to multiple outlets that the actress died peacefully at her home in Wilton, Connecticut, on Thursday.
Powell, known as one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, began in entertainment as a child singer, selling Victory Bonds during World War II.
Her first feature film appearance was on Song of the Open Road in 1944, and she quickly secured her reputation as the star of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musicals.
Powell starred in musicals such as A Date with Judy (1948), Royal Wedding (1951), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Hit the Deck (1955).
