Who is Hayden Robert Bruce Summers ?

A US Marine had to have part of his skull removed after he was knocked out with a single punch by an Australian goalkeeper.

Hayden Robert Bruce Summers, 34, faced the Northern Territory Supreme Court on Friday and was found guilty of unlawfully causing serious harm to US Marine Glen Thomason after beating him.

Summers had claimed that he was acting in self-defense after Thomason allegedly told him, “I could kill you, I’m a trained killer.”

He said his hit was only a ‘six out of ten’, but the judge ruled that Mr Thomason ‘didn’t deserve a hit like that’.

CCTV footage

The jury examined dramatic CCTV footage of the confrontation between the two men after Thomason was ejected from Monsoons nightclub in Darwin in the early hours of April 11 last year.

In the footage, which does not have recorded audio, Thomason is seen yelling at the security guard.

He then waves his arms across the goalie’s face and two seconds later, Mr. Summers punches Mr. Thomason in the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground.

While he was unconscious, the bouncer rolled the Marine onto his side and placed him in the first aid recovery position.

The court heard that Mr. Thomason had part of his skull removed and had to spend a “significant amount of time” in hospital and in rehab following the altercation, according to ABC News.

Defense attorney Peter Maley insisted that Summers acted in self-defense, saying the 34-year-old did not mean to hurt Thomason.

“All of the witnesses, most of whom were other bouncers, gave indisputable evidence that the US Marine was aggressive and engaged in confrontational behavior,” Mr. Maley told the court.

Everyone says that the marine did not leave or calm down and that he screamed and screamed.

“Everyone remembered him saying words like, ‘I could kill you, I’m a trained killer, I’m a US Marine.’

Summers said he feared the Marine was about to hit him because of a ‘death look’ and ‘threatening’ hand gestures, evidence the prosecution called a ‘lie’ that did not match CCTV footage. .

The Crown argued that Mr. Thomason’s hand gestures were non-threatening and he was trying to explain how another security guard “manhandled” him.

During a summary of the evidence Thursday, Judge Jenny Blokland told the jury that Thomason was “clearly unhappy with his rejection” as he had not been told why he was removed from the facility.

Judge Blokland reminded the jury of the Crown’s argument that the punch was not a reasonable response.

Prosecutor Ian Rowbottom argued that Summers did not explore other options that might have defused the situation, such as stepping back and asking his colleagues for help.

Rowbottom said that instead of “knocking someone out,” Summers could have pushed Thomason.

Judge Blokland reminded the jury of the prosecution’s argument that Mr. Thomason “didn’t deserve a hit like that,” even though Summers described the force of the hit as “a six out of 10.”

Summers will face court at a later date for sentencing.
