Hanny Papanicolaou Biography

Who was Hanny Papanicolaou?

Hanny Papanicolaou, 38, gave evidence for a second day at the NSW High Court saying he has no recollection of killing Marjorie Welsh at her Ashbury home on January 2, 2019.

She says that morning that she felt ‘depressed and panicked’, and she tried to call her best friend many times, but she never answered.

All a Sydney cleaner remembers about inflicting fatal injuries on her 92-year-old client is waking up with a knife surrounded by “blood,” she said at her murder trial.

She then allegedly passed out on her before jumping over Ms. Welsh’s back fence, before beating her with her canes, throwing heavy crockery at her and repeatedly stabbing her with a kitchen knife.

Papanicolaou denies murdering her one-year-old client, and instead, she has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on the basis of substantial impairment due to mental abnormality.

‘I see Marj… the sound of the machine makes me open my eyes and get up, I don’t know what I’m doing, just looking at Marj in front of the fridge with a lot of blood’ she said.

‘The blood is on my hands, I was holding the knife… I just grab the cloth and just run.’

Death

Mrs Welsh died six weeks later in hospital, but not before giving two police interviews in which she describes ‘Hanny the housekeeper’ beating her savagely before setting off her medical alarm.

Prosecutor Christopher Taylor on cross-examination asked why Papanicolaou left her in a pool of blood, pottery and a broken cane with a stabbed abdomen and chest, never asking for help.

Taylor said that after the attack he entered two bedrooms, leaving a trail of blood in a closet, in a desperate attempt to find cash.

‘I don’t remember,’ she said.

Earlier that morning, the regular player lost $430 from the poker machines in less than an hour and was left with only $11 in her bank account, the jury was told.

Taylor said the house cleaner jumped the back fence to avoid detection and, when he confronted Ms. Welsh, he tried to make it look like a random home invasion.

After the alarm went off, Papanicolaou said that all she could think about was her baby, but the Crown asked her why she then turned off the light in the house.

Earlier, Papanicolaou told the jury that she had felt increasingly isolated in an unhappy marriage, she was deeply depressed, and she escaped her problems through gambling.

Papanicolaou can only remember that she ran away with the knife that she had wrapped in a white cloth which she then threw away.

The crown case is that Papanicolaou discovered that Mrs. Welsh had received $8 million from the sale of a property and she thought that she would be on vacation until the end of January.
