Who is Eddy Reyes?
A 35-year-old Californian was charged Wednesday with kidnapping his wife nearly five years ago, resulting in his death, authorities said.
Eddy Reyes was arrested on April 15 after authorities filed a criminal complaint alleging that he kidnapped his 21-year-old wife, Claudia Sánchez Reyes, who last resigned from her job on May 6, 2016. Federal prosecutors for the Central District of California said in a statement.
During an investigation by the Santa Ana Police Department into the disappearance of Sánchez Reyes, investigators learned that the woman’s colleagues caught her arguing with her husband or driving her to a rented car shortly before her arrival.
In an affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, authorities said a drop of Sánchez Reyes’s blood was subsequently found in the vehicle and a dead dog had a body in the truck, according to the press release.
The affidavit also describes a history of alleged domestic violence by Reyes against her wife, including “various threats to kill her,” as well as the temporary court orders that Sánchez Reyes received against her husband, prosecutors said.
Authorities said Reyes, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official, is currently being held without restraint. He is expected to appear in court on May 3.
If Reyes is convicted of kidnapping and kidnapping, he faces possible death sentences or life in federal prison without parole.
