Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has died aged 84 from complications from Covid-19, his family announced.

“We have lost a husband, father, grandfather and an extraordinary and loving great American,” a statement said.
“We want to thank the medical staff … for their thoughtful treatment,” he added.
The statement said that he had been fully vaccinated against Covid.
Powell became a trusted military adviser to several of the leading American politicians.
He also served and was injured in Vietnam, an experience that later helped define his own military and political strategies.
