This was not the first time she auditioned
For her audition this year, Wray surprised the judges with her rendition of “I Am Changing,” sung by former Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson on Dreamgirls. But this isn’t the first time she’s tried it out for the show. Wray previously auditioned when she was still in high school.
“When it happened, I called my mom and cried,” Wray said in an interview about finding out she would be on American Idol. “I auditioned in my sophomore year (of high school) and didn’t make it past the first round. Now I have come to meet the famous judges. ”
Wray is currently a college student
Wray is studying musical theater at Northern Kentucky University. She said her teachers were “super supportive” with her decision to compete on American Idol.
“I was asking how we were going to work my schedule, because it’s going to be so busy, and they were so wonderful,” she said in an interview. “They were so forgiving; They just wanted me to come, you know, chase my dream.
Wray is the tallest girl in her hometown
Wray is over six feet tall. She told the American Idol judges that she might be the tallest girl of hers in her small town of Perryville, Ky. She said in an interview that she was a “weirdo” while she was growing up.

She has a TikTok account
Wray has more than 66,000 followers and 1.7 million likes on TikTok, where she has been posting about her time on Idol. Before that, she used to post clips of herself singing.
Wray believes representation is important
In addition to being taller than her peers, Wray told local news that she was one of the few black students in her class while she was growing up.
“That has a lot to do with how you develop as a person, when you don’t really see yourself anywhere and you just stand out,” she said.
Wray said she wants to help young people feel represented through her talent for acting.
“I want them to feel seen because I feel like if I had seen myself more on television or in my community growing up, just someone who was different and wasn’t ashamed of being different wouldn’t have had to. deal with so much insecurity and pain, you know? ” she said.
“So I really hope to create a space where younger children, and even adults, can look and say, ‘Hey, she’s different, but she’s great. She’s out there doing her thing, she’s singing, she’s following. their dream and I want that to inspire them to do that too. ”
