A former nursing assistant has been handed seven consecutive life sentences for the murder of elderly patients at a US military veterans’ hospital.

Reta Mays, who worked at the West Virginia facility, was given 20 more years for trying to kill another.

She had already admitted in an earlier hearing to murdering the seven by injecting them with insulin at the Louis A Johnson Medical Center.

The judge described Mays, 46, as a “monster of the worst kind.”

Investigation

She killed Robert Edge Sr., Robert Kozul, Archie Edgell, 84, George Shaw Sr, 81, Felix McDermott, 82, Raymond Golden, and W.A.H. – identified as William Alfred Holloway, 96 between 2017 and 2018 while working the night shift.

According to the police, she would then stand by and watch her colleagues try to revive them after giving them fatal insulin injections.

United States District Judge Thomas Kleeh told her that ‘you knew what she was doing’ before sentencing her to seven consecutive life sentences, a punishment that means she will likely die in prison.

“Several times your advice pointed out that you should not be considered a monster. I respectfully disagree with that. You are the worst kind. You are the monster that nobody sees coming, ‘she said.

Mays cried and apologized when addressing the court briefly before learning her sentence.

“I know there are no words I can say that alter the pain and comfort of families,” she said.

“I’m not asking for forgiveness because I don’t think I can forgive anyone for doing what I did.”

Death

“You murdered my father without cause or reason,” he said. “As you listen to my words, I want them to replay in your mind over and over again until the day you die.”

Mays wept as she addressed the court, saying, “There are no words I can say that can offer the families any comfort. I can only say that I am sorry for the pain I caused them and my family.”

Mays’ attorney, Jay McCamic, told the court that her client had suffered from mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, since he was in the US military in Iraq between 2003 and 2004.

The judge said that during the period of the murders, Mays had used her work computer to search the Internet for “female serial killers.” He said that she had lied to investigators three times about her role in the deaths.

Judge Kleeh acknowledged that she had struggled with mental health issues, but said there was no “explanation” or “justification” for Mays’ actions.

While the deaths piled up during her night shifts at the hospital in 2017 and 2018, Mays did internet searches for female serial killers and watched the Netflix series ‘Nurses Who Kill,’ Kleeh said.

She also said that she repeatedly denied her involvement and told investigators three times that she was unaware of the crimes.

Hospital officials reported the deaths to the VA inspector general and fired Mays after evidence from her pointed to her.

An interview with Mays after her guilty plea was included in a lengthy report released after Tuesday’s sentencing by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General that details the deficiencies at the hospital.

In it, she said that she administered insulin to patients she believed were suffering so that they could pass ‘smoothly’. She said that she also had a lot of stress and chaos in her personal and professional life, and that her actions gave her a sense of control.

But Assistant US Attorney Jarod Douglas called her actions “predatory and planned, not reactionary.”

“These men did not need mercy from the defendant,” Douglas said. “In the end it was not the defendant’s decision.”

Mays’ attorney, Jay McCamic, described her long history of depression, anxiety, mental health and other medical problems, including a trip to the emergency room when a patient knocked her unconscious with a punch to the face in May 2016. .

Victim

At Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, the court heard impact statements from relatives of the victims.

Norma Shaw, widow of Air Force veteran George Shaw, said in a recorded video message that he “became a man trapped in his own body” after Mays injected him with insulin. When he later died, the family initially believed that his death was due to natural causes.

“He was everything to me. In my heart I know I need to forgive her for what he did, and someday I will, but not today. I know that judgment will come one day,” she said.

Robert Edge Jr, son of Robert Edge Sr, who was Mays’ first victim, said that she had deprived nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren of her love.
