A team of specialists investigating unsolved cases say they have identified the Zodiac Killer, one of America’s most prolific serial killers who terrorized communities in the San Francisco area in the late 1960s with a series of brutal murders and unsolvable riddles.
The Case Breakers, a team of more than 40 former police investigators, journalists and military intelligence officers, have tackled other mysteries such as the D.B. The theft of Cooper’s kidnapping, the disappearance of former union chief Jimmy Hoffa and other unsolved cases. The group believes the killer is responsible for a murder hundreds of miles away that was never linked to him.
The Zodiac Killer has been linked to five murders that occurred in 1968 and 1969 in the San Francisco area. Unlike most serial killers, the Zodiac mocked the authorities with complex ciphers in letters sent to newspapers and law enforcement. The murders have spawned books, films and documentaries in the years since, and amateur and professional detectives have studied the case in an effort to unmask the killer.
In the decades since the first murder, many possible suspects have been investigated.

Case Breakers now says it has identified the Zodiac Killer as Gary Francis Poste, who passed away in 2018. The team’s years of digging revealed new forensic evidence and photos of Poste’s darkroom. One image shows scars on Poste’s forehead that match the scars on a sketch of the Zodiac, the team said.
Other clues include deciphering letters sent by the Zodiac that revealed him as the killer, said Jen Bucholtz, a former Army counterintelligence agent who works on unsolved cases. In a note, the letters from Poste’s full name were removed to reveal an alternate message, she told Fox News.
“So you have to know Gary’s full name in order to decipher these anagrams,” Bucholtz said. “I just don’t think there is another way that someone would have found out.”
The team believes Poste also killed Cheri Jo Bates on October 31, 1966 in Riverside, California, hundreds of miles south of the San Francisco area and two years before the first Zodiac-related murder occurred. Bates, 18, was found dead in an alley on the Riverside City College campus after her father telephoned police to report her missing.

The following year, authorities received a handwritten letter that led investigators to believe that the murder could be related to the Zodiac Killer. In 2016, investigators received a typed anonymous letter from someone who admitted writing the above note and said it was a “joke in bad taste.”
“The author admitted that he was not the Zodiac killer nor the killer of Cheri Jo Bates and that he was only seeking attention,” the police department said.
Investigators later confirmed that the perpetrator was not involved in Bates’ murder, and that the Zodiac was never linked to the crime.
“Our Homicide Resolved Unit has determined that the 1966 murder of Cheri Jo Bates is unrelated to the Zodiac killer,” the Riverside Police Department’s Homicide Resolved Unit told Fox News. “We understand the public interest in these unsolved murders, but all inquiries about the Zodiac Killer should be referred to the FBI.”
“The Cheri Jo Bates case remains an open investigation and we do not have any additional details to disclose at this time,” police added.
5 confirmed dead, 2 injured, possibly 20–28 total dead (claimed to have killed 37)
The Case Breakers believe Bates was the sixth Zodiac victim and have tried to get investigators to match her DNA to Poste’s, without success, the team said. According to a 1975 FBI memo to Riverside police obtained by the team, the agency said Bates was a victim of the Zodiac.
“The real part here has everything to do with ego and arrogance,” Bill Proctor, a former police officer who spent 40 years in the television news, a member of the Case team, told Fox News of the Riverside Police Department. Breakers. “They are not talking about what they have, which means that anyone else at the table could have a reasonable argument that information from an outside organization is as valuable, if not more, than what the company has already done. Police department”.
The team said a series of coincidences connect Bates and Poste: Poste was an Air Force veteran when he received medical checks for a firearm incident at a hospital located 15 minutes from the scene of Bates’ murder. A paint-splattered wristwatch was collected at the crime scene and is believed to have been worn by the killer.
Poste painted houses for more than four decades, the team said. In addition, detectives found a print on the heel of a military-style boot, which matched the same style and size as those found at other Zodiac and Poste crime scenes.
This year, the Riverside Police Department offered a $ 50,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the decades-old murder case.
The Zodiac terrorized communities throughout Northern California in the late 1960s. The killer has been linked to five murders, but claimed to have killed 37 victims. The first of the confirmed Zodiac killings occurred in December 1968 when a man and a woman were shot and killed in a car in Benicia, California. On July 4, 1969, another man and a woman were shot in Vallejo. Survived.
Later that year, a couple was stabbed near a lake. The man survived despite suffering multiple stab wounds.
A taxi driver was also shot and killed in San Francisco that year. No one has been charged or identified in connection with the killings. Unlike most serial killers, the Zodiac taunted authorities with complex ciphers and letters.
In 2020, a team of code breakers cracked a 340-character cipher that the Zodiac sent to the San Francisco Chronicle. At the time, the FBI said the Zodiac case was still ongoing.
“I hope you are having a lot of fun trying to catch me … I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise long before because now I have enough slaves to work for me,” the decrypted message read.

Police Department and the FBI and tried unsuccessfully to contact Poste’s relatives. The San Francisco Police Department said it was unable to discuss potential suspects in the Zodiac case because it is still an ongoing investigation.
A California woman who lived next door to Poste and his wife told Fox News that she believes he is the Zodiac Killer after seeing the evidence collected so far. Gwen, who declined to give her last name, said Poste and his wife cared for her as a child in the 1970s and 1980s. He taught her to shoot firearms several times a week, but also controlled and abused his wife. , said.
She declined to elaborate. Poste also became something of a father figure to her son’s friends, she said.
“He lived a double life,” she said. “Since I’m an adult thinking back, it all makes sense now. At the time I was a teenager, I didn’t put two and two together until I grew up. I realized that Gary is the Zodiac.”
