William Robert Ice Biography
The kidnapper, William Robert Ice, shot Officer Cody Carpenter multiple times before fleeing the scene and was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Carpenter, the wounded police officer, was airlifted to the hospital, but he is said to be “in a good mood under the circumstances” and is expected to make a full recovery.
The girl, named Savannah Childress, 14, who disappeared from Denton, North Carolina, more than a week ago, was found safe.
William Robert Ice, 38, of Jackson Center, Pennsylvania, shot an Arkansas police officer when he was confronted after his SUV was recognised as being linked to a child abduction case.
The shooting broke out after Ice’s truck was found at the fast food restaurant around 8 p.m. Saturday in Lonoke, about 43 miles from Little Rock.
Ice, of Jackson Center, Pennsylvania, initially complied with orders to get out of the vehicle, but then he pointed a gun and began shooting at officers.
Carpenter was hit, while his colleague Brandon Ray, who was unhurt, returned fire when Ice returned to his vehicle and fled the scene.
Ray is on administrative leave pending an investigation, but Lonoke officials said they expect him to make “an honorable return to service” once the investigation is complete.
An Arkansas state trooper later spotted the truck and chased it until the vehicle was disabled in a snow bank. The 14-year-old girl fled the vehicle and was safely recovered by a state trooper.
Inside the truck, a police officer found Ice seriously injured by what initially appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Ice later died in a Little Rock hospital.
The Amber Alert for Childress was canceled around midnight Sunday, and the Aware Foundation, which focuses on missing and endangered people, later confirmed that he was safe.
Ice was also wanted by Pennsylvania law enforcement in connection with other cases of child predators, according to the Arkansas State Police.
In addition to the kidnapping, he was wanted on charges of s*xually assaulting a 14-year-old in Pennsylvania, the Mahoning County Human Trafficking Task Force said, according to The Dispatch.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office also said Ice had been communicating with girls in Alamance County.
The Arkansas State Police, in collaboration with sheriff’s deputies in Davidson County, North Carolina, and with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation determined that the girl had been abducted.
As of Sunday afternoon, the wounded officer was said to be stable, and Childress was returning home that day.
She had been missing since February 11, and her father last saw her around 7 a.m. when she left her house in Denton.
At 8.35 a.m., she logged out of her virtual classroom and her parents reported her missing when she did not show up to pick up her younger brother at the bus stop.
Detectives discovered that Childressm had been communicating with Ice online and that her messages had been explicit.
They said the suspect used practices that are commonly used by s*xual predators. Ice took Childress from her home on February 11, detectives said.
