A Utah bicyclist died after being struck three times by the same absent-minded driver, and now prosecutors are weighing charges, authorities said.

Warren Yoshio Watanabe was riding on the sidewalk when a 77-year-old woman exiting the parking lot of the Warren’s Family restaurant in Roy struck him on Sept. 20, the Standard-Examiner reported.

The woman then backed up and stopped before driving forward and hitting him again, authorities said.

Police said they then put the vehicle in reverse again before driving forward and hitting Warren, who was lying on the ground directly in front of the vehicle, news station KSL-TV reported.wikipedia

He repeated the maneuver one more time before noticing the cyclist on the ground and called 911, the outlet reported.

He was 62 year old.

Death

Watanabe was taken to hospital with 14 broken ribs and severe kidney and liver injuries, the outlet reported. He died five days later.

Police said the woman knew she had hit something, but she did not realize that she was a person and she kept trying to maneuver to avoid it.

“There is no indication or belief that this was anything other than an accident,” Roy’s police spokesman Stuart Hackworth told the Standard-Examiner. “She was not aware of what she had hit.”

Authorities said they will meet with the Weber County Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether charges should be filed in the incident.
