Vincenzo Lirosi Death
They kicked him out and told him to go home. It was then that he went into the forest.
The Sigma Chi fraternity of the University of New Hampshire said in a statement that Lirosi was not invited to the party, which they said was a “welcome home” event for a member who had just returned from military service.
“We are saddened to learn of the death of Vincent Lirosi, an uninvited guest who died after leaving an event held by some members of our chapter,” the fraternity said.
“We are cooperating with the authorities as they investigate the circumstances of his death.”
The University of New Hampshire has suspended the fraternity while they investigate the fight that preceded the death of the sophomore in history.
“As is common practice when an investigation involved a fraternity, we contacted the organization’s national headquarters and collectively agreed to provisionally suspend the organization with immediate effect,” said the school’s dean of students, Kenneth Blackman.
A vigil for Lirosi was held at the university on Monday, and a GoFundMe fundraiser for his funeral expenses exceeded $ 77,000, according to the New York Post.
Lirosi’s brother Giovanni thanked those who attended Monday’s vigil.
“ All of you who were there on the vigil and all of you who have been messaging and those of you who supported us in silence, we love you all very much, ” he said on the GoFundMe page.
The student was last seen walking down a wooden path used by students around 1 a.m. Saturday. The route was a familiar shortcut he would take to get to his house. He was reported to have disappeared two hours later, around 3 a.m.
“We started thinking about how he would think and we started walking through the woods on different trails,” Blanchard explained. “We walked all the way to Jackson’s Landing to see if he was there, and we couldn’t find anything.”
The body of Lirosi, who was from Whitman, Massachusetts, was found around 1:20 p.m. Sunday.
Durham police used a K-9 and thermal drone to search the woods, while New Hampshire State Police and Fish and Game used a helicopter to search for it.
Lirosi’s wallet was found in a parking lot while his cell phone was found at the frat house.
“While this is not the outcome we were all hoping for, we are grateful that we were able to find Vincenzo and bring closure to his family,” said Durham Police Chief Kelley.
On Sunday night, the university issued a statement to students following the news.
“It is with heavy hearts that we write to share that the search for Vincenzo Lirosi did not end as we expected. The college student was found in the wooded area of Coe Drive this afternoon. State and local authorities continue to investigate the cause of death, but at this time he is not believed to be a suspect.
‘Our thoughts and prayers are with Vincenzo’s family and friends. This is a very sad day for our community and at this time we are focused on providing the necessary support and resources for all who knew him or were affected by his death. We ask all teachers and staff to be considerate of students affected by this tragedy and to offer accommodations for assignments and attendance.
‘A sudden death brings a variety of feelings, especially shock and disbelief. Please take care of yourself and seek help if you need it, ‘the university wrote.
