Police then arrested Van Phu Bui, a 55-year-old man on parole, and charged him with attempted murder, police said.
Bui was convicted of first-degree s*xual assault in the Bronx in 1995 and sentenced to six years to life, according to state records. He was paroled in 2019 and is now listed on state registries as a Level 3 s*x offender, the most serious designation, for s*xually abusing the 17-year-old girl in 1994.
Bui was also charged with criminal possession of weapons and robbery in the city in the 1990s, police sources said.
The two men did not know each other and there was apparently no interaction before the attack, police officials said.
But after the attack, the suspect appears to be saying something to the group gathered on the sidewalk, video shows.
He then returned to the restaurant before fleeing, police said.
Officers found the victim unconscious and dazed on the ground with head trauma.
Paramedics rushed him to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was treated for a fractured skull, a fractured cheekbone and a brain bleed, authorities said.
Police say he is in critical but stable condition.
