“The Van Conner bassist and Screaming Trees songwriter died last night of a prolonged illness at the age of 55.
“It was the pneumonia that got him in the end.
“He was one of the closest friends I’ve ever had and I loved him immensely.
“I will miss him forever and ever…”
Gary revealed that a liver infection sent his brother to the hospital, but he admitted that he had been suffering from “a series of health problems” since late 2021.
Van played bass on the rock band’s hits, including All I Know and Nearly Lost You.
He and his brother Gary formed the band in 1984, along with singer Mark Lanegan and drummer Mark Pickerel in Ellensburg, Washington.
Lanegan died last year at the age of 57.
Man this sucks,” said one person. “The Trees are one of my favorite bands of all time, a trusted old friend, always there to put into words everything I couldn’t say. Sorry for your loss.”
Another person added: “Sad news. I’m so sorry to hear about Van. His music will be a great legacy for all of us. I love you and your family.”
Just a few days earlier, Gary shared a sobering update.
“Van has been making progress this past week, but we almost lost him,” the brother shared. “Last year he was in a coma two different times. One for emergency stomach surgery and the other for covid and a blood clot in the lung.
“Since then he has gone downhill, unable to walk and ultimately confined to bed.
“Right after New Year’s, his liver almost finished him off.
“He’s still quite out of it, but he’ll be back again. It’s going to be a long road for him, but his family is very supportive.”
