Valerie Peck, 40, was arrested and charged with murder and child abuse after police said she shot and killed her two-year-old son in Uintah County, on Utah’s eastern side, before driving for hours. with your body in the car. . The sheriff’s office first shared that they responded to a report of a shooting near Fantasy Canyon in central Uintah County on Dec. 14 at 2:25 p.m. The initial press release said officers found the woman “just west of State Highway 45 on Glen Bench Road” and that the boy was dead when they arrived. “The woman, whom the agents identified as the mother of the child, received medical attention at the scene before being transferred to a hospital due to the severity of her injuries,” authorities said.
In the subsequent press release, the sheriff’s office said its investigation revealed that Peck and his son Zack went for a drive earlier on Dec. 14 in the Dry Fork Canyon area. The two spent time in a camping area before Zack was killed, authorities said. “After spending time in the area, Peck put her son back in the vehicle and shot him with a 22-caliber rifle. Then Peck shot himself,” the news release said.
Then Peck drove through the area for a few more hours before the sheriff’s deputies finally found her.
A Police Affidavit Indicates That Peck Shot Herself Twice in an Attempt to Kill Herself
A police affidavit claims Peck shot himself twice in the “upper limbs” after killing his son in a suicide attempt, the Deseret News reported. The affidavit said that when she was unable to commit suicide, she headed to another canyon to try to “freeze to death,” wrote the outlet, where sheriff’s deputies found her. Peck was in the camp for about 30 minutes before shooting her son, the affidavit says:
Valerie then used the .22 rifle and shot herself twice. Valerie told me that she was trying to kill herself. When this didn’t work out, she drove through Uintah County and then decided to go to Fantasy Canyon. When I asked her what she was going to do in Fantasy Canyon, she told me that she didn’t know, that she maybe she would freeze to death.
Detectives have not said whether the call to authorities came from Peck or someone else. A Facebook page that appears to belong to her mother shows that she has a husband, David. The two have an older son together. Detectives requested that Peck be denied bail since her other son and her husband are in the area.
According to the Deseret News, Peck was involved in an incident at the Ashley Regional Medical Center in Vernal, Utah, in early July and was charged with burglary. At the time, her husband called the court and reported that Peck was struggling with mental health issues, the outlet wrote. Peck pleaded not guilty in September.
