Valentin Lazar Biography
Who is Valentin Lazar ?
A 21-year-old murderer faces life behind bars after pleading guilty today to murdering a mother of two whom he grabbed on the street as she left a hospital appointment before strangling and beating her to death.
Valentin Lazar, 21, who was photographed in a mugshot released this afternoon, inflicted multiple injuries on Maria Rawlings, 45, before leaving her in the bush in Romford. Ms. Rawlings was attacked after visiting an accident and emergency following a fall.
Having left the hospital unseen, she boarded a bus in Romford shortly after 11 p.m. on May 3, where her path crossed with Lazar. The mother of two had only been on the bus for about 10 minutes when it ended and she and the defendant got off.
Lazar was caught on CCTV while he was guiding his victim into some bushes. After about 30 minutes, he emerged from the undergrowth with only his bag, the Old Bailey had heard.
Prosecutor Paul Jarvis had said in a previous hearing that Lazar attacked Ms. Rawlings because she was a vulnerable woman alone at night.
He said: ‘She probably carried a knife.
“ He led her into the bushes before violently attacking her and finally killing her before stealing some of her belongings and leaving her. ”
After the attack, Lazar boarded a bus to Dagenham, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.
Ms. Rawlings’ naked body was found hidden in brush by a dog walker around 2.30pm the next day in the Little Heath area.
She had suffered multiple injuries to her mouth, chest and knee, as well as 13 broken ribs, but there were no signs of sexual assault.
A baseball cap with the defendant’s DNA was left near the body.
Following an appeal to the media, Lazar, who lived in rented accommodation in East Ham, was identified on social media.
In his arrest, officers found clothes that matched those of the attacker and had traces of blood.
On Friday, Rawlings’ two older daughters sat in court as the defendant pleaded guilty to murder with the help of a Romanian interpreter.
The court was told that he admitted to the murder, but denied that he intended to kill Ms. Rawlings or that he had a knife.
In ordering the arrest of the accused, Judge Peter Rook QC said: ‘You have pleaded guilty to murder in a case of the utmost seriousness.
“There is only one sentence that the court can hand down and that is life imprisonment. A judge will decide the minimum that he must meet. ‘
Emma Currie from CPS said: ‘Maria Rawlings was a vulnerable woman. She had attended the ER the night of her murder, but tragically she left before they saw her.
The prosecution’s case included DNA and fingerprint evidence, as well as CCTV footage that captured Lazar leaving with the bag that Ms. Rawlings had been wearing that night.
Valentin Lazar is a violent man who has shown little remorse for his actions.
When he was initially arrested, he even claimed to suffer from memory loss and said: ‘I can’t remember what happened yesterday.’
“Women should be free to travel around London without fear of violent attacks.
‘The CPS is committed to bringing offenders to justice regarding violence against women and girls. I hope this conviction provides a sense of justice to Ms. Rawlings’ family and friends. Our thoughts stay with them right now. ‘
The murder of Ms Rawlings comes amid heightened concern for the safety of single women following a series of attacks by strange predators.
