Tonisha Barker Biography
A suicidal young mother jumped off a Tennessee highway overpass overnight with her young son in her arms, killing them both.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department has launched an investigation into the deaths of Tonisha Lashay Barker, 26, of Memphis, and her son, who has been identified by family members as Jonathan Jones, 21 months.
According to officials, the incident began to unfold before midnight Monday, when officers began receiving 911 calls about a woman who had attempted to run into a gas pump at the Shell gas station on Law Road.
Witnesses who called 911 said they observed the woman getting out of her car with a small child and walking toward the nearby Interstate 40 overpass, never to return, WREG reported.
A few minutes later, authorities received a call from a truck driver reporting that his vehicle was struck by “a large object” that fell from the bridge.
Officers who responded to the scene near Exit 93 found the bodies of Barker and his son.
Sheriff’s spokesman Tom Maples said WKRN agents are now trying to determine what may have motivated Barker to end her life and that of her son.
Barker’s death is classified as suicide and Jonathan’s death is under investigation.
The woman’s grandmother said she had been depressed for the past few days. Her work on a COVID-19 testing site had ended last month.
