Who is Tom Burch?

A three-year-old girl died after a five-year-old boy shot her in a Minnesota home on Friday.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call about the Bena shooting shortly before 4 a.m.

Sheriff Tom Burch called the shooting “accidental” in a news release. It is unclear what happened in the home or how the children gained access to a weapon.

None of the children have been named and their relationship has not been disclosed.

Shooting

People who die from ‘accidental shooting’ are three times more likely to live in a home with a gun, and children under 12 who die from a gun often die in their own homes.

Many parents believe their children do not know where the gun is in the home, but research from the Center for Injury Policy and Research reported that 75 percent of children do.

Those who live in households with firearms are also reported to have twice the risk of homicide and three times the risk of suicide compared to those who do not live with firearms.

There are many ways to store a gun, but the American Concealed Transportation Association recommends keeping guns and ammunition locked up and unloaded in separate storage. In addition to keeping the weapon out of sight and out of the reach of children.

Minnesota’s Child Access Prevention Laws, or CAP Act, state: ‘Minnesota prohibits any person from negligently storing or leaving a loaded firearm in a location where the person knows, or should reasonably know, that a child under the age of 18 has access to the firearm, unless reasonable steps are taken to secure the firearm against access by the child.

“This prohibition does not apply if the child gained access as a result of illegal entry,” according to the Giffords Law Center.

It is not known how the five-year-old boy accessed the gun.
