Who is Timothy Shaw?
Timothy Shaw appeared in Downing Center Local Court for the first time on Wednesday, three days after being arrested in Kings Cross.
The 35-year-old academic, who has a doctorate in philosophy and boasts other ‘distinguished academic credentials’, is accused of attacking Alana Sutherland, 31, on Sunday morning.
Shaw is the subject of a temporary apprehended violence warrant issued by police to protect Ms. Sutherland and has pleaded not guilty to one count of common battery related to domestic violence.
Charged
Police allege that Shaw attacked Ms Sutherland between 7.30am and 8am on Sunday and was charged at Kings Cross Police Station half an hour later.
A witness said that he saw Ms. Sutherland outside Shaw’s apartment near Hughes Street, Potts Point, when four police cars arrived on the scene.
“She was crying in the middle of the street as she watched him get arrested,” the witness said.
The couple is believed to have previously lived together.
Shaw was found guilty of possessing a prohibited drug
Shaw was convicted of possession of a prohibited drug and placed on a 12-month probation order without conviction in District Court in December 2020.
At the same time, he was convicted, fined $500 and banned from driving for six months for being on the road with a prohibited drug in his system.
Hemmes, who was in a relationship with Fowler for three years beginning in 2015, owns at least 70 hotels, restaurants and other entertainment venues.
Sutherland was seen helping the 49-year-old pub baron and Fowler with her daughters a day after she announced the end of her relationship in July 2018.
The recently separated couple were photographed enjoying a picnic with the girls, now six and four, and boarding a seaplane back to their $100 million estate, The Hermitage.
Statement
A day earlier, Hemmes announced his separation from Fowler in a statement.
“Kate and I have the utmost love and respect for each other,” she said.
“In early 2018, Kate and I decided that our friendship and respect for family life would become the center of our relationship.
“We love our children very much and for now we continue to live together happily in our family home.

In November 2020 it was reported that Hemmes had given Fowler a $7.5 million Dover Heights cliffside mansion, less than a 10-minute drive from her home.
Hemmes and Fowler met on a boat in Europe in 2014 and she gave birth to Alexa the following November. Saachi was born in June 2017.
Ms Sutherland was photographed with Hemmes, her 26-year-old model girlfriend, Madeline Holtznagel, and the two children in Byron Bay in July last year.
Hemmes was ranked 97th among the richest people in Australia with an estimated fortune of $1.2 billion on Financial Review’s Rich List last year.
He has recently expanded his operations, which include the Sydney Ivy, Establishment, Coogee Pavilion and The Newport locations, in the New South Wales and Victoria regions.
