Who is Tia Minhinnick?

Tia Minhinnick was scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday but was forced to phone due to technical difficulties with the Covid-affected court system.

The 20-year-old, who did not apply for bail, faced a single murder charge in the death of 41-year-old Angela Huata.

Her body was found in a home on Glendale Road in Springvale, southeast of the city, on Thursday afternoon.

Police say Ms. Huata and Minhinnick knew each other, but the nature of their relationship has not been revealed.

Magistrate Cecily Hollingworth heard that the alleged killer suffered from an undisclosed mental illness.

He is vulnerable due to his age and appearance. He is a young person,’ she said.

Minhinnick’s attorney requested that a prison nurse see his client before taking him to a pretrial detention center, where he is expected to remain for at least the next 10 weeks.
The court heard that prosecutors needed more time than usual to prepare their brief of evidence against the alleged killer.

While the details of the Crown case remain a mystery, prosecutors have indicated that biological evidence will be a key component.

He will return to court on June 7.

Witness

Police are also hoping to obtain statements from a number of international witnesses as well as interstate warrants in the hope of obtaining mobile phones from people they believe can help in the prosecution.

Minhinnick was arrested in Melbourne’s CBD on Monday, four days after Ms Huata’s body was found, and was later charged with murder.

Ms. Huata’s distraught mother said the family is still waiting for the coroner’s report to confirm her cause of death.

“We are absolutely broken,” she wrote on social media.

The woman had four sons and a one-year-old daughter, and she has been remembered as a kind and loving mother.

“How could anyone hurt Ange? She is so harmless,” wrote a friend.

‘Our poor Angie, who could do such a thing?’ someone else asked.

Another close friend said: ‘RIP my dear old friend.’

“We are definitely one of a kind, I will never forget the laughs we all had, we were all so inseparable, you never stopped making us laugh.”

‘Taken too soon.’

Ms. Huata’s family plans to take her body back to New Zealand.
