Who was Terrell Rhodes?

A dramatic video has captured the moment when a man accused of beating his girlfriend’s two-year-old son to death pounced on a detective and tried to grab his gun in an interview room.

Terrell Rhodes, 27, was arrested in Las Vegas on May 11 in connection with the beating to death of the boy Amari Nicholson.

The frantic fighting captured on surveillance video occurred when two officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were interviewing him in an interrogation room.

Rhodes had allegedly confessed to killing the boy moments earlier because the boy urinated on himself.

Missing

Amari was reported missing by his mother, Tayler Nicholson, on May 5 after Rhodes called her to tell her that a family member of the boy’s biological father had taken him out of his apartment.

Nicholson was in Colorado at the time and had left her son in the care of her boyfriend.

Amari’s paternal relatives were quick to deny the claims that the boy had been taken.

The police then targeted Rhodes as the prime suspect.

Rhodes stood next to his girlfriend as local media interviewed them about the boy’s disappearance, denying that he had any involvement and repeatedly referring to Amari as his own son.

“What’s really disgusting is that people are making assumptions, thinking that I had something to do with it … We will never do anything like that to him,” he said at the time.

Charged

Terrell Rhodes, 27, has been charged with first degree murder in the death of his girlfriend’s two-year-old son, Amari Nicholson.
Additional charges included assaulting a protected person with the use of a deadly weapon and resisting a public official with the use of a firearm.

He has already pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Causes of death

The video, which was only released Wednesday, shows a distraught Rhodes sitting in the interview room with his right arm handcuffed to the table.

At first, Rhodes seemed to be crying as he covered his face with his shirt and said “let me go” and “I can’t go back.”

Seconds later, he flung himself onto the table and tried to grab the detective’s gun with his left hand.

The gun was in his holster on the detective’s right hip.

Both officers immediately tried to immobilize him while repeatedly shouting “pistol”.

The officer could be seen hitting Rhodes several times before a third officer rushed into the room and helped him immobilize him.

During the fight, Rhodes yelled, ‘I’m going to kill a fucking mother.’

No shots were fired during the incident.

In addition to the first degree murder, Rhodes was later indicted for the gun theft incident.
