Who was Teddy Balkind ?

Teddy Balkind died after his neck was sliced open during a collision at a high school hockey match.

The Connecticut high school hockey player who died this week after a skate opened his neck during a tragic incident on the ice has been identified.

Teddy Balkind, a 10th grader at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, was fatally injured Thursday night during a confrontation at a private school.

During the game, Balkind fell to the ice. As he lay on the ground, another player who was close to him was unable to stop in time and the two collided, authorities said.


Teddy Balkind, who was in the 10th grade, died at Greenwich Hospital Thursday night, shortly after the incident during their 5 p.m. game.

He studied at St Luke’s, a private school in New Canaan.

When word of his death spread, the hashtag ‘stick with Teddy’ began circulating with an image of a hockey stick, a reference to the sad tribute in 2018 when a bus carrying Saskatchewan Junior’s Humboldt Broncos collided. Teddy was playing Brunswick School when he went down.

As he lay on the track, another player accelerated towards him and collided with him, with his father watching from the stands.
