Tara Payne disappears
Baltimore police continue to investigate the disappearance of Tara Payne, also known as Savannah Payne, after the 26-year-old disappeared early Tuesday morning in downtown.
Payne spent the night before celebrating her birthday with friends of hers. She was last seen around 1:30 a.m. ET Tuesday, several blocks from the nearby riverfront. The Baltimore Police Department issued a warning notice later that night, offering preliminary details about her investigation and requesting that anyone with information on Payne contact her missing persons unit.
Homicide detectives took over the police investigation Wednesday, a Baltimore police spokesman confirmed to Newsweek. The spokesman said people with knowledge of Payne’s possible whereabouts should contact the police department’s homicide division at 410-396-2100.
Payne’s loved ones spread the news of the woman’s disappearance on social media shortly after her disappearance, sharing photos and identifying physical characteristics along with pleas to help police locate her.
Terry Stopowski Moritz, who referred to Payne as her niece in a Facebook post shared Tuesday, described the search as a “nightmare” and said the woman’s purse was found on Boston Street. Baltimore police could not verify that Payne’s purse was discovered Wednesday, or confirm other statements Moritz relayed on Facebook, given the ongoing nature of the department’s investigation.”It’s a fucking nightmare; my niece Savannah Payne didn’t show up for lunch with me today to celebrate her birthday; when I called her cell phone, the Baltimore police responded,” Moritz wrote in Tuesday’s social media post, which was posted. it had shared 11,000 times as of Wednesday night.
“She hasn’t been seen since she was partying around Canton last night; her car was left where she parked it and her purse was found on Boston Street. If anyone was in that neighborhood last night and heard or saw ANYTHING, please contact the Baltimore police, ”the post continued.
Investigators “have reason to believe that Ms. Payne may have fallen into the water” near the Boston Street corridor, which police identified as the place of her disappearance, according to a department spokesman. The Baltimore Police Marine Unit searched the water Wednesday afternoon, but Payne was still missing in the early afternoon.
Moritz asked those who know Payne’s family personally to refrain from contacting them, as “they need a little space and they also want to leave the phone free in case the police call them.” Payne’s parents were reportedly present during the search for the Baltimore Police Marine Unit Wednesday afternoon, according to WJZ-TV, the Baltimore CBS affiliate.
