Tamir Rice Mother

Tamir Rice’s mother, Samaria Rice, pays tribute to her son on the sixth anniversary of his death.

On Sunday, the grieving mother posted a tribute on Facebook asking for $ 6 in donations to the Tamir Rice Foundation, which “invests in the growth and enrichment of all children through after-school programs” and advocates for police reform.

“How to honor my son and his brothers on this day. It is very difficult, but allow me to continue. It will never be easy. Rih Baby Tamir Rice, ”she wrote in her Facebook post.

“When we paid tribute to Tamir Rice on the sixth anniversary of her death, I wanted to show how pain becomes power: by loving my children and grandchildren unconditionally. By sharing photos of the Chicago pavilion, now housed at the Arts Bank, ”Samaria began her testimony.

“Under this flag, located in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 22, 2014, my son was killed by the police. It is the eternal memory of my son Tamir, ”she writes. “In solidarity, on the occasion of Tamir Rice’s sixth birthday, you can donate $ 6.00 for six years that were too early for the Tamir Rice Foundation.

Samaria continued: “All proceeds will go to the Tamir Rice Foundation so that we can continue to build an Afrocentric Cultural Center to honor Tamir and support the youth of Cleveland.”

In 2014, 12-year-old Tamir was shot and killed by a white officer while using a replica pellet pistol outside a recreation center.

Widespread surveillance footage showed police officer Timothy Loehmann stopping in front of the black teenager in a police vehicle, getting out and firing his gun almost immediately. Tamir died hours later from gunshot wounds.

In December 2015, a grand jury cleared Loehmann of all charges of shooting Tamir.

Tamir’s family agreed to a $ 6 million settlement in a civil rights lawsuit against the city in 2016, as confirmed by PEOPLE at the time.

As part of the deal, the city did not have to admit to any wrongdoing, Zoe Salzman, a lawyer for the family, told People. Due to the settlement, the case never went to court.

Emery Celli Brinckerhoff & Abady LLP, the law firm representing Tamir’s family, issued a statement at the time: “Historically though, no amount of money can adequately compensate for the loss of a life.”

“In such a situation, there is no closure or justice. Nothing will bring Tamir back. His unnecessary and untimely death leaves a great void for those who knew and loved him that can never be filled.
