Talmika Bates Biography
Who is Talmika Bates?
Talmika Bates, 26, claims she was traumatized by a German shepherd named Marco after he chased her and bit her scalp during a shoplifting arrest on Feb. 10, 2020, according to the lawsuit filed Tuesday.
Brentwood police officer Ryan Rezentes had to pull the police dog off Bates’s head after she failed to obey commands from her at least twice, according to reports.
The gruesome moment was recorded on officers’ body cameras and released by Bates’ attorneys. In the footage, Bates can be seen hiding in a field among some bushes before police respond to her screams after they released a K-9 to find her.
After finding her and biting her head off, Marco finally lets go of her and the officers helped Bates out of the bushes. Her skull was partially red as parts of him were no longer scalped and her hair was also torn out.
“My whole brain is bleeding,” says a shocked Bates in the graphic video.
Victim
Brentwood Police Department Officer Ryan Rezentes is pictured with Marco, the German Shepherd who reportedly refused to listen to commands at least twice before Rezentes tossed him away.
Patrick Buelna, one of Bates’ two attorneys along with Adante Pointiner, told the New York Post that the cops’ only response to his client’s cries for help and medical assistance was that he “shouldn’t have run.”
“Talmika says that he still has nightmares where the dog bites him and bites his head off,” Buelna said.
“She says she felt like she was going to die that day and she really didn’t think she would live to tell her story, but she is alive and thankful. She had to have her scalp surgically reattached to her head. She suffers from severe depression and remains traumatized by the beating.
Arrest
After her arrest, Bates was taken to a local hospital, where surgeons sewed up her scalp.
Since the incident two years ago, Ella Bates says she often suffers from headaches, anxiety and often remembers the time the dog rubbed her scalp while she slept.
“My whole brain almost fell out,” Bates told KTVU. ‘I’m supposed to be dead right now, not alive, and I’m grateful.
“I feel ugly,” she added. ‘I feel miserable, I get depressed. I am not happy with myself. I don’t even feel pretty.
Bates pleaded guilty to grand theft last year and spent 120 days in jail, court records show. She is on probation for a year. Her restitution amount has yet to be reset, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
Meanwhile, Marco the German shepherd, who is still listed on the Brentwood Police K-9 unit page, is described as smart, very outgoing and “I’d like you to say hello if you see him with Officer Rezentes.”
The Brentwood Police Department has not yet responded to DailyMail.com’s request for comment.
