Suzi Egli Hanna is a wildlife conservationist and media personality who is the wife of Jack Hanna, a retired American zoo keeper and director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. She was the director of the zoo from 1978 to 1992 and is held largely responsible for raising its quality and reputation.


They have both been since 1968.

In April 2021, Hanna’s family announced that she had been diagnosed with dementia, which was later thought to be Alzheimer’s disease, and that she would make no further public appearances. Egli is a native of New Jersey who studied physical education and health at Muskingum University in Ohio. They were both Muskingum students, on campus.

Most recently, in 2017, Egli gave her graduation speech at the university. “Suzi’s lifelong commitment to public service, as a wildlife conservationist, world-traveling philanthropist and compassionate volunteer, has changed many lives,” said University President Susan Hasseler at the time.

Egli and Hanna have traveled the world together, and she was a co-star in Jack Hanna’s long-running Into the Wild.

“Of all our adventures together, the first and most important was our move from our homes to the Muskingum Hills,” Suzi Hanna said before the keynote address. “Our lives were forever changed by that decision.”

The animal lover retired from the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in Ohio in late 2020, where he had worked for nearly 40 years. Her daughters shared the news that she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in an emotional letter obtained by KMTR.

The letter praised Hanna’s “passion for wildlife conservation and education” and noted that her love of nature was “at the core of who our father is and all that he has accomplished with the help of so many.”

“She has spent her life connecting people and wildlife because she has always believed that getting people to see and experience animals is key to engaging them in more impactful conservation efforts,” the letter continues.

The family’s statement also said that the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium “has been an important part of our lives” since 1978. “To say that we are so proud to be their daughters is an understatement,” added her family.
