Sunday Burquest died on Sunday April 18 after a years-long battle with cancer. His daughter Kennedy broke the news on Instagram and it was confirmed by Inside Survivor’s Martin Holmes.

Burquest, who was a pastor when she competed in Survivor, announced last June that she had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer that spread to her lymph nodes and ovaries. At that time, the doctors had given him months to live.

Eight years later, she found herself in a similar situation, and she told PEOPLE that she intended to once again trust her faith to help her get through the tough times. “Things happen to you,” she said, “but you can handle them with strength and faith. And my faith gives me strength. I will fight this. The stage has been set for God to do great things, whatever happens ”.

Cause of death

Sad news for the “Survivor” family. The “Millennials vs. Gen X ”Sunday Burquest died on Sunday April 18 after a years-long battle with cancer. Her daughter Kennedy broke the news on Instagram and it was confirmed by Inside Survivor’s Martin Holmes.

When Burquest competed in “Survivor”, she was already a breast cancer survivor. She wrote on her CBS profile that she was most proud of after her children beat breast cancer.

“In addition to my four amazing children, I am very proud to be a breast cancer survivor,” Burquest wrote. “After five surgeries, eight rounds of chemotherapy and 28 days of radiation, not to mention the horrible drugs that were prescribed for you, I am still here! It was important to me that my children saw me as a “warrior” rather than a crybaby. Of course, it was difficult, but I would not let cancer take over my life. Thanks to my faith, I was able to kick cancer’s butt! ”

Unfortunately, in the summer of 2020, Burquest’s cancer returned, this time in her ovaries and esophagus. At the time, she told her Instagram followers that she was determined to get over it despite it being a stage 4 diagnosis.

“The esophageal cancer started and traveled to my ovary. It’s not a big deal, of course, and it’s not fun to listen to, but I’ll say I’ve already survived cancer once and I’ll survive it again, that’s why I’m wearing this shirt and saying right now that I survived. “she said in an Instagram video.

But in a later video, she relayed the news that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes and liver and was likely terminal.

The “Survivor” family was quick to offer words of support and sympathy.

“You are your mother in many ways, Kennedy,” wrote Adam Klein. “She always saw you that way. When I look at you, I see her too. … She will guide you, until she meets you she does “.

Rachel Ako wrote: “The memory of Sunday lives on. Heart of yours, Kennedy. Let me know if you need anything. ”

Just a few months ago, Burquest met with the “Survivor Mothers Squad” which includes Jill Behm from Survivor: Nicaragua, Lisa Keiffer from Survivor: Vanuatu, Leslie Nease from Survivor: China and Carolyn Rivera from Survivor: Worlds Apart, Chrissy Hofbeck from Survivor: Heroes vs Healers vs Hustlers and Burquest. During the meeting, they played all these crazy games and made a “9 to 5” music video. It seemed like a lot of fun.

In a video recap of the weekend, Rivera wrote: “Friends forever. “Survivor” brought us together and we are so blessed by that. Creating memories that will last a lifetime! I love these ladies! ”

In Kennedy’s post, Nease wrote: “Sending love and prayers for you and your family. Your mother is literally one of the most stellar human beings I have ever met.”

Burquest is the ninth member of the “Survivor” family to pass away.
