Who is Steve Nikoui ?

Thursday was “an excruciating day” for California carpenter Steve Nikoui. He knew that his son Kareem, a young United States Marine, was stationed at the Kabul airport. But when he learned that there had been a bombing there, he had no idea if Kareem was dead or alive.

“I stayed home and didn’t go to work yesterday because there was that attack and I knew he was there,” Nikoui told The Daily Beast early Friday morning. “So all day I was glued to television.”

Just hours after the US military warned of an imminent terrorist threat, a suicide bombing rocked Hamid Karzai International Airport and its surroundings. At least 13 US servicemen died and 18 others were injured. Dozens of Afghans were also killed in the terror attack.

Military officials have not released the names of the troops killed, but said they included 10 marines, two soldiers and a Navy doctor.

Steve Nikoui said he knew the Marines contacted the families of anyone killed in action “within eight hours.” At approximately 7:15 p.m. PT, “these young people came closer,” he said.

They first appeared on Nikoui’s phone, which was linked to his doorbell camera, he explained. He had been watching the news for news about his son or his comrades, and he wanted to make sure he intercepted any bad news before his wife and his other son came home and saw a group. of marines standing there.

The Marines who came to break the news of Kareem’s death were “more shocked than I was,” Nikoui said. “Actually, I was trying to comfort them. But at the same time, I just wanted them to get out asap so that no one in my family would come back and see them. I thought it was appropriate to be able to tell him. ”

“I haven’t been to bed all night,” Nikoui continued. “I am still in a state of shock. I have not been able to understand everything that is happening.” From now on, Nikoui’s plan is to go to Dover, Delaware, and collect the remains of his son.

Kareem “loved what he was doing, he always wanted to be a Marine,” Nikoui said, noting that his son had been stationed near his home on Camp Pendleton. This made it easy for Kareem to visit on weekends, and he often brought “10 or 15 more Marines” with him. When the holidays came around, Kareem always took some friends with him for a home cooked meal, according to Nikoui.

“My wife and I are very honored that [since] these other children were not in their homes, we were able to provide some kind of family life for them,” he said. “I really loved that [Marine Corps] family. He was a devotee, he was going to make a career out of this, and he wanted to go. Feel free to be called to duty. ”

Through tears, Nikoui expressed flashes of anger along with his anguish. He said he wants to “respect the office” of the president, but he doesn’t have much love for President Joe Biden right now. Nikoui, a Trump supporter, was happy that Trump was in office when Kareem joined the Marine Corps. “I really believed that this guy didn’t want to put people in danger,” he said.

“They sent my son there as a paper smuggler and then they had the Taliban outside provide security,” Nikoui said. “I blame my own military leaders… Biden turned his back on him. That is all.”

On Thursday, the president vowed to strike back at the perpetrators behind the blast.

“For those who carried out this attack, as well as for anyone who wishes harm to the United States, know this: we will not forgive. We will not forget. We will chase you and make you pay. I will defend our interests and our people with all the measures at my disposal, ”said Biden.

Maxton Soviak, a member of the United States Marine Corps from Berlin Heights, Ohio, was also killed in the attack Thursday, Recorder Sandusky reported.

Soviak graduated in 2017 from Edison High School, where he played soccer, according to The Telegraph, before finally moving to Guam.

A self-described “patriot” on Instagram, Soviak’s feed often showed him enjoying the great outdoors, on boats, beaches, and mountains. He was also proud of his military service, posting photos with his military colleagues and commenting on photos of his friends.

The Navy confirmed that a sailor was killed in the bombing, but did not confirm Soviak’s name until 24 hours after the family was first notified.

“My beautiful, intelligent, to the beat of his own drum, annoying and charming little brother, was killed yesterday to help save lives,” wrote Marilyn Soviak, his sister, on Instagram. “He was a fucking doctor. there to help people. and now he’s gone and my family will never be the same again. “
