Prosecutors said Thursday that a former Orange County deputy sheriff was charged with burglarizing a dead man’s home.
Steve Hortz, a 12-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Department, was summoned to a Yorba Linda home on July 20 to verify the owner’s well-being. It found that the man in his 70s died of natural causes, according to a statement from the district attorney’s office.
As authorities claimed, surveillance video from the home showed Hortz entering the home about a week later while on duty and in his uniform. Authorities allege that he left the door open and returned two more times in August in civilian clothes.
Prosecutors claimed that the stolen property contained ceiling fans and safes with 15 guns.
Authorities said the Sheriff’s Department began the investigation after providing the surveillance video and the items were missing, according to the arrest attorney managing the owner’s property.

Hortz, 42, was arrested last month and is on trial for two felonies for three second-degree felony robberies and two major firearm thefts.

He resigned on September 30 and faces a layoff, according to the district attorney’s office.
Hortz could face more than four years in prison if convicted.
