Pazen told CBS4 that investigators believed the attack on Silverberg was not a crime of bias, but a crime of opportunity, as the suspects committed multiple crimes traveling from East Denver along Colfax Avenue to Lakewood. However, they have not ruled out bias, the chief said. We cannot allow this to become the status quo, ”Pazen said. “Our community is our eyes and ears. They help us identify the people responsible for crimes like this. “Yeshiva Toras Chaim said in a statement that he is “grieved” by the murder.
“We are caring for our teachers, staff, students and their families in the face of this tragic and incomprehensible act of violence,” the statement said. “We are grateful for the support we are receiving from our Denver community and across the country, and for the work of local law enforcement authorities who have made this their top priority. Our community seeks comfort and privacy at this time. ”
The Cleveland Jewish News said Silverberg was originally from the University Heights neighborhood of that city. Police said they were interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video while pushing forward their investigation.
Then another man was shot and killed about half an hour later, further west of the city center, near Yeshiva Toras Chaim, an Orthodox Jewish seminary. He was identified Wednesday as Shmuel Silverberg, 18, a student at the school. It appears the victim was walking outside the school when the suspects approached and began shooting, ”Clark said. “We don’t know if there was any interaction between the two at this time.”
Police Chief Paul Pazen said during a news conference Wednesday that the fatal shooting does not appear to have been “motivated by bias,” but investigators are not ruling out the possibility. After the shooting, the group is suspected of robbing a business in the Denver suburb of Lakewood and another vehicle.
Police offered a reward of up to $ 2,000 for information leading to their arrests. Authorities are searching for three vehicles that were involved in the crimes: a brown 2018 Honda CRV, a 2020 dark blue Toyota Camry sedan and a 1998 black Toyota RAV 4 SUV.
