Why Shepherd Bushiri arrested

The flashy pastor has been in the Hawks’ crosshairs for some time, having appeared in court last week in another money laundering case.
Bushiri has been haunted by scandal and scrutiny since he launched a charismatic prosperity church called the Enlightenment Christian Encounter.
This is the couple’s second arrest by the Hawks in as many months, and the current one is preceded by an action in February 2019 for an alleged R15 million money laundering scheme.
In a statement, the Hawks explain that Bushiri turned himself in at a Pretoria police station after trying to evade authorities, while his wife was arrested at their Sandton home.
Hawks Colonel Katlego Mogale: “Four suspects, including a pastor between the ages of 25 and 39, were arrested for alleged involvement in fraud and money laundering worth R102 million.”
The Hawks added that their serious organized crime investigation team arrested the first couple, Willah Mudolo and Zethu Mudolo, at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday.
They have already appeared in Pretoria Magistrates Court, where their case was postponed until the end of the month for a bond hearing.

The prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary, leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG), were arrested by the Hawks for an investment scheme called the Rising Estate.
According to the statement released by the church, the couple were asked to report to the Hawks’ offices Monday night in Pretoria accompanied by their attorneys to discuss an issue related to the investment company.
The incident comes after several people alleged that Bushiri stole their hard-earned money through an investment scheme, which was now refusing to pay them back.
“The Hawks informed the attorneys for our leaders, the Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and the prophetess Mary Bushiri, late Monday afternoon that they (Hawks) are requesting the couple to come to their office at 11 am accompanied by your lawyers to discuss an issue related to a certain investment related to a certain company.
We are told that while the Prophet and the lawyers were preparing for the 11 am appointment, the Hawks went to his house before the 11 am appointment and arrested the Prophet’s wife alone. We are told that the Prophet is on his way to the Hawks office to turn himself in. He believes in the country’s justice system and will comply with everything that the law requires until this entire war is over, ”reads the statement shared on Bushiri’s social media platforms.
The church and its leader said they weren’t ready to discuss the matter in depth, as the Hawks were still looking into it.
