Who was Shaun Niven?

TRIBUTES have started pouring in after the death of Stranraer Chairman Shaun Niven, aged just 52.

Niven took over as chairman last summer following the resignation of Iain Dougan.

Shaun Niven was well liked at Stranraer

A brief statement issued by the club’s vice-chairman, Robert H Rice, reads: “Stranraer Football Club is shocked and saddened by the death of its much-loved chairman, Shaun Niven.

“Shaun was a devoted football man and a great friend to everyone at Stair Park.

“Our thoughts are with Shaun’s family and friends at this terrible time.”

Motherwell chief executive Alan Burrows said: “My goodness, what terrible and shocking news.

“The thoughts and deepest condolences of everyone at Motherwell Football Club are with Shaun’s family, his friends and everyone at Stranraer FC.”

League Two rivals Stenhousemuir said: “It is such tragic news to hear this morning.

Causes of Death

Shaun was much loved in the Scottish league and football.

“We send our thoughts and love to Shaun’s family, friends and everyone at Stranraer FC during this difficult time.”

While Livingston added his condolences, saying: “Shaun was a brilliant guy – he just ‘understood’ Scottish football and what he meant to so many. Incredibly helpful and approachable man. A true sad loss.

“Condolences from the entire Livingston Football Club at this incredibly sad time.”

Queen of the South posted: “Everyone at Queen of the South was shocked this morning to learn of the death of Stranraer Chairman Shaun Niven at the age of 52.

“Shaun was well known in football circles, locally and nationally, and he was a familiar face in Palmerston when Stranraer visited.

“He was recently involved in the negotiations that saw a deal that saw Ruari Paton sign for us in the summer. He will be missed.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends in particular, but also everyone at Stranraer FC. Rest in peace.”
