Who is Shannon Spann?

The widow of the first American victim of the Afghanistan war is criticizing President Biden’s “defiant stance” as evacuations in Kabul continue to be marked by scenes of violence and chaos as thousands of Americans and allies try to flee the Taliban.

Former CIA officer Shannon Spann, whose husband, CIA agent Mike Spann, was the first American to be killed in Afghanistan in 2001, told Fox News that it was “inconceivable” that the United States did not have a plan to “evacuate the most vulnerable of our friends and partners. ”

Heartbreaking scenes have emerged this week in Kabul as thousands of Americans and Afghans, many of whom helped the United States during the war, beg to be placed on US evacuation flights.

Interview

Biden said Monday that he defended his decision to withdraw US troops and explained in an interview Thursday that he also defended his strategy to do so.

“I am deeply disappointed in President Biden’s defiant stance in his address to the nation,” Spann said of Biden’s comments Monday, where he denied responsibility for the chaos.

“In times of conflict, excellent leaders keep people bigger than the problem. We completely failed to keep people bigger than the problem. ”

Spann accused the United States of neglecting the vision of those involved in the 20-year war, including Gold Star staff, families and the Afghan people.

“We prioritize a narrow subset of a problem over all those people,” Spann said.

Since the Taliban regained control of the country on Sunday, crowds of desperate Afghans have been gathering outside the Kabul airport, where the United States is conducting evacuation flights.

On Wednesday, heartbreaking images surfaced showing mothers passing their children over a barbed wire fence to soldiers in the latest attempts to flee the country.

While US officials insist the Taliban have agreed to allow “safe passage” for civilians struggling to get to the airport, Spann said the chaotic scenes show Afghans do not believe in insurgents.

“You don’t have to look beyond Kabul airport to see that local Afghans don’t believe the [Taliban] story of ‘we’re going to be peaceful, we’re not going to retaliate, I’m going to invite women’s participation'” Spann said.
