Who was Shane Warne ?

Australian cricket legend and greatest player of all time Shane Warne has died at the age of 52.

Shane Keith Warne was an Australian cricketer who captained the Australian national team in One Day Internationals. Widely considered one of the greatest bowlers in cricket history, Warne was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in the 1994 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. Wikipedia

Warne’s management issued a brief statement early Saturday morning (AEDT) that he passed away in Koh Samui, Thailand from a suspected heart attack.

“Shane was found unconscious in his villa and, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he could not be revived,” the statement read.

“The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course.”

Cause of Death

The news is the second devastating blow to Australian cricket in 24 hours with his great partner Rod Marsh also dying on Friday after suffering a major heart attack last week.

Affectionately known as ‘Warnie’ and adored by millions around the world, Warne is considered by many to be the greatest bowler to ever bowl.

His stellar international career spanned 15 years and saw him take 708 Test wickets, the most for an Australian and second most all time behind only Muttiah Muralitharan.

Having made his Test debut at the SCG in 1992, Warne became a key figure across all formats in one of the periods of greatest sustained dominance of any team in world cricket.

He was a member of Australia’s 1999 World Cup winning and five Ashes winning teams between 1993 and 2003.

Career

The legpinner carved out a storied career during his time playing for Australia and was affectionately called ‘Warnie’. He remained a popular figure after his retirement, forging a successful television career as a commentator and pundit.

Warne was a member of Australia’s ODI World Cup winning team in 1999 and also played a starring role in the team’s five Ashes title victories between 1993 and 2003.

After his retirement, Warne guided the Rajasthan Royals to a fairy tale victory in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008 as their captain and manager.
